We’re excited to team up with Dranks and Draws for an extra special sketch night at 1AM Oakland Generator… participants have the chance to design and paint a public mural! We believe that art and creative expression in public spaces has immense impact for provoking inspiration, conversations, and community engagement. Freedom of speech is what 1AM stands for so with this event, we are scratching and sketching the surface of what our amazing art community can create. Each Sketching the Surface event will feature a new central theme disclosed at the start of the event along with the description and location of the mural wall.
The first Sketching the Surface event will occur this March 11th from 4-7pm at the 1AM Generator, 1523 B Webster, Oakland. Entrants can drop in anytime during the event time window and will be required to provide their email address, phone number, and credit line for entry. Entrants will receive one 11” x 17” sheet of paper to submit their sketch. Aside from the provided sheet of paper, entrants will be responsible for all of their own other sketching material(s) needed to complete the sketch submission.
You must be 16+ years of age to enter and provide email address, phone number, and credit line for entry.
One submission is allowed per artist and cannot have any direct signature or symbols identifying the artist’s name.
Submissions are to be started and submitted at the event venue.
Sketches are to be black, white, and grey only. No color.
Group sketch submissions are not allowed.
*Not following any of these ground rules will disqualify your entry
Voting will start with 1AM’s staff and collaborative partners choosing the top 5 Sketching the Surface event submissions. These 5 submissions will be presented anonymously via 1AMsf’s social media to decide the winner.
Winning Sketch to Mural:
The artist with the winning submission will get to spray paint (with a lesson to start if needed), their winning sketch in color on one of 1AM’s public walls. At the discretion of 1AM, a select 1AM artist and past 1AM class alumni will assist/lead the winning sketch artist with the painting process. The mural will be produced as best as possible to capture the essence and details of the winning submission sketch, but is not expected to be an exact replica.
